KONTAN.CO.ID – JAKARTA. Wealth tax is a concern in the effort to create a fair tax system. However, its implementation must be done carefully.
The aim is to not disrupt economic stability and still take into account the conditions of society and existing inequalities.
Chairman of the Apindo Taxation Committee, Siddhi Widyaprathama, emphasized the importance of fairness in the taxation system.
"In essence, taxes must be fair," he said in a discussion entitled Fair Tax Policy Proposal, Tuesday (27/5).
One suggestion is to implement a wealth tax to broaden the tax base. However, Siddhi said this expansion must be done carefully so as not to cause negative impacts.
He also criticized the implementation of new taxes without strengthening the existing tax base.
“If we target new taxes without building the tax base, it is like hunting in a zoo,” he said.
This means that the implementation of wealth tax must be accompanied by efforts to expand the existing tax base.
Siddhi also highlighted the increasing public awareness in fulfilling tax obligations.
"People are now aware. They know when to report their SPT," he said.
However, he assessed that there were still challenges in implementing wealth tax.
He also linked wealth taxes to economic inequality.
"Ten percent of people control 80% of the economy," he stressed.
Therefore, wealth tax must be implemented carefully so as not to exacerbate existing inequalities.
Siddhi reminded the importance of learning from other countries. In some countries, high taxes are accompanied by good public services.
“Paying high taxes, but welfare is also high,” he said.
Thus, wealth tax needs to be balanced with improved public services. The public must feel the benefits of the taxes paid.
He also emphasized the importance of justice in enforcing tax laws.
"When talking about fair taxes, apply it to everyone without discrimination," said Siddhi.
This means that all parties must comply with tax regulations in a fair and transparent manner.
