IDXChannel – The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that 69,62% of Indonesia's population will have health insurance in 2022, up 1,26 points from 2021. Of this number, 62,22% of the population in the country are participants BPJS health.

In fact, only 0,58% of people use private insurance. This means that the burden on the government in providing health services is also quite heavy. (See graphic below.)

This data shows how much the Indonesian people depend on health insurance provided by the government. Presence BPJS health is still the main choice in supporting the need for health in the country.

So, why do people prefer BPJS Kesehatan over private insurance?

Reasons for Less Popular Private Insurance

According to Darmawan Prasetya, a social policy researcher from the Association Prakarsa, there are two factors that cause insurance to become less popular than BPJS Kesehatan. First, because BPJS Kesehatan is more affordable than private insurance.

Quoting Sequis, BPJS Health has three class levels that differentiate facilities and also the amount of contributions per month. This class difference is intended so that all people have the same opportunity to get health insurance by the state.

Three levels of BPJS differentiate inpatient room facilities at the hospital. However, it does not differentiate between doctor's services and medicines provided.

While Health Insurance The private sector is more complex than BPJS Kesehatan. Considering that many private insurance products are offered with very diverse benefits and different premium price levels.

If you want complete benefits, the contributions that must be issued are also more expensive. Meanwhile, protection with fewer benefits will be priced cheaper.

Second, because the insurance market in Indonesia has never been developed before. According to him, health welfare in Indonesia is built from a community system, no longer a social policy system.

"Sociologically, social security, including health, always depends on the family and society. It's a family illness that cares for and pays for it, and sometimes they still get donations from those closest to them," said Darmawan when contacted IDXChannel, Friday (3/3).

This causes the habit of accessing insurance services is not well developed in the community. (ADF)
