Multidimensional Poverty Profile of East Kalimantan Province

In general, multidimensional poverty in East Kalimantan Province (East Kalimantan) has shown a significant decline in 2012-2021. The multidimensional poverty rate fell from 38,93% in 2012 to 7,54% in 2021 or decreased by more than 28,99 points. A significant decrease occurred in rural areas with a decrease from 61,53% in 2012 to 13,41% in 2021. For a decade, multidimensional poverty experienced a significant decline from 2014 (30,19%) to 2015 (18,97%). %).

The highest decline in multidimensional poverty at the village level also occurred in 2014-2015 with a decrease of up to 17,94 points. The Province of East Kalimantan has consistently experienced a decline in the multidimensional poverty rate from 2012 to 2021, but there was an increase that occurred in 2016-2017 in urban areas of 1,24 points. In addition to the decreasing number of multidimensional poverty, there was also a decrease in the intensity of multidimensional poverty from 48,53% in 2012 to 43,60% in 2021. The largest decrease occurred in villages which experienced a decrease from 50,03% (2012) to 43,54 % (2021). This shows that the level of intensity of poverty has decreased, indicating that the burden of poverty experienced by the poor in East Kalimantan has become much lighter and less than a decade ago.

The multidimensional poverty index describes the percentage and intensity of multidimensional poverty. IKM in East Kalimantan has decreased from 0,19 in 2012 to 0,03 in 2021 or decreased by 0,16 points. The biggest decline occurred in 2014-2015, namely a decrease of 0,06 points. In general, over the last 10 years, there has been a decrease in the number of SMEs in East Kalimantan Province, but when viewed from villages and cities, there has been an increase in the number of multidimensional poverty that has occurred. In urban areas the multidimensional poverty rate increased from 8,77% (2016) to 10,01% (2017), while in the same year in rural areas it increased from 29,94% to 30,27%. However, a gradual decline occurred in the percentage and intensity of multidimensional poverty.

Multidimensional Poverty Index of East Kalimantan Province Based on Regency/City

In general, district/city poverty in East Kalimantan originates from indicators of decent housing, under-five nutrition and morbidity. Apart from these indicators, there are also other indicators that contribute to district/city poverty, such as house density,[1] birth certificates,[2] and years of schooling[3]. The regency/city with the highest poverty index is Mahakam Hulu Regency with an IKM of 0,069. As much as 15,82% of the population in Mahakam Hulu District experience multidimensional poverty with a severity level of 43,36%. The district/city in East Kalimantan with the lowest poverty is the city of Balikpapan with a multidimensional poverty index of 0,006. Only 1,39% of the population in the city of Balikpapan experience multidimensional poverty with a severity level of 43,23%.
