Measuring the Governance Index of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Strengthening Substantive Democracy in Indonesia

This report documents research related to governance and the contribution of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in strengthening substantive democracy in Indonesia. This research is important considering the strong role of CSOs in strengthening substantive democracy. In the Indonesian context, CSOs have initiated the transition to democracy and contributed to the consolidation of democracy after the fall of the authoritarian regime, have been involved in the establishment of quasi-state institutions and have consistently advocated for empowerment at the grassroots. This study focuses on measuring the CSOs governance index and documenting the contribution of CSOs to substantive democracy conducted on 99 CSOs spread across the Greater Jakarta, North Sumatra, Central Java, Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY), South Sulawesi and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).

This research is an implementation of the collaborative practice between CSOs and the government through the “National Research Priority (PRN)” program which is spearheaded by the Ministry of Research and Technology/National Research and Innovation Agency and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) with funding from the Education Fund Management Institute ( LPDP).
