President Joko Widodo receives 12 executive directors of a number of non-governmental organizations to discuss strategies for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (Sustainable Development Goals) 2015-2030.
Executive Director of INFID Sugeng Bahagijo said the government should follow up on 17 SDGs signed by 193 UN member states in August 2015 in New York, United States. Jokowi is advised to establish an action plan to achieve the SDGs in 5 to 15 years.
“First, there must be a legal basis for SGDs. Furthermore, the executive committee should be established consisting of representatives from ministries/agencies, local governments, and representatives of civil society,” he said at the Presidential Office, Thursday (17/12).
Those three steps, he added, needs to be done by the government because in September 2016 the United Nations will review the SDGs preparations undertaken by member states.
On the environmental aspects of development, Executive Director of WALHI Abetnego Tarigan said the SDGs highlight two points: the preservation of the territorial waters, marine and coastal, and sustainable forest ecosystem management.
“We are facing environmental challenges, such as the problem of coastal reclamation, forest fires. The concern is that Indonesia has ratified the globally recognized SDGs while the national and regional policies are not in line,” he said.
At the meeting with President Jokowi, Secretary General of the Indonesian Women's Coalition Dian Kartikasari urged the government to pay special attention to achieve the SDGs in the field of gender equality and health.
Three major problems are still faced by Indonesia, according to Dian, is the high rate of maternal mortality, children under five and infant mortality, as well as early childhood marriage.
