
JAKARTA, July 30, 2026 – The PRAKARSA officially joined as a member of the Steering Group of the Independent Commission for the Reform of International Corporate Taxation (ICRICT). This membership marks a strengthening of the role of The PRAKARSA in promoting international tax reform that is fairer, more inclusive and in favor of the interests of developing countries.
The decision was announced by ICRICT after a communication and discussion process that has been ongoing since 2025. In its official invitation, ICRICT assessed PRAKARSA has a strong track record on issues of economic justice, fiscal policy, inequality, sustainable development, and taxation. PRAKARSA It is also expected to strengthen the representation and perspective of Asian organizations in determining the strategic direction of ICRICT.
ICRICT is an independent commission that brings together economists, academics, policymakers, tax experts, and public figures from various countries to promote fundamental reforms to the international tax system. ICRICT believes that reforming global tax rules needs to be placed within a framework of public interest, development, reducing inequality, and strengthening democratic governance. The commission is co-chaired by economist Jayati Ghosh and Nobel Prize laureate in economics Joseph Stiglitz.
The Steering Group serves as ICRICT's primary advisory and governance body. Its members provide strategic direction to the Secretariat, help set organizational priorities, and participate in discussions on advocacy positions, publications, campaigns, and future work agendas. PRAKARSA will join a number of international and regional organizations, including ActionAid, Oxfam, Tax Justice Network, South Centre, Global Alliance for Tax Justice, Christian Aid, and Tax Justice Network Africa.

The involvement is relevant to the work PRAKARSA in promoting fiscal justice, domestic resource mobilization, tax transparency, preventing illicit financial flows, and strengthening the position of developing countries in global economic governance. This membership also creates a space to integrate Indonesia's research findings and advocacy experience with the international tax reform agenda, including discussions underway under the United Nations Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation.

Through the Steering Group, PRAKARSA will promote stronger prominence on issues of concern to Asian and Global South countries, including the distribution of taxing rights across borders, effective taxation of multinational corporations and ultra-high-net-worth individuals, transparency of beneficial ownership information, and the use of tax revenues to finance social protection and sustainable development.
PRAKARSA has attended the ICRICT Steering Group meeting for the first time on July 27, 2026. The meeting will be the beginning of the integration process PRAKARSA into the working mechanisms of ICRICT, as well as an opportunity to introduce policy priorities and experiences PRAKARSA in developing evidence-based research and advocacy in Indonesia and the region. Going forward, PRAKARSA is committed to leveraging this membership to expand research collaboration, knowledge exchange, and policy advocacy with civil society organizations, academics, and policymakers at the regional and global levels. This involvement is expected to strengthen the voice of developing countries in building a more democratic, accountable, and socially responsible international tax system.
