WHO Must Meaningfully Involve Civil Society Organizations in the 77th World Health Assembly

Jakarta, The PRAKARSA - The PRAKARSA Public policy research and advocacy institutions are involved in public consultation activities to provide input to country representatives who are negotiating in World Health Assembly (WHA) 77th May 27 – June 1 2024 in Geneva.

At the 77th WHA, there are four main issues that will be discussed, namely 1) One billion more people benefit from universal health coverage (UHC), 2) One billion more people are better protected from health emergencies, 3) One billion more people enjoy better health and well-being, and 4) a more effective and efficient WHO provides better support to countries.

More than 20 civil society organizations that focus on health issues were present to provide input to the government. Not only CSOs, representatives of the foreign ministry were also present to listen to the various inputs given.

CSO provided some input on the draft Pandemic Agreement, among other things, emphasizing that global pandemic governance should be more equitable and reflect the needs of affected individuals and/communities. Then, in the agreement document it is necessary to explicitly identify vulnerable groups which are not limited to disabilities, gender and indigenous communities.

WHO also needs to explicitly establish an independent implementation and compliance committee, in which there is meaningful involvement of civil society and vulnerable groups as representatives of various state groups in monitoring state compliance.

In the forum, CSO hopes Pandemic Agreement and amendments International Health Regulations (IHR) can be immediately ratified by taking into account input from civil society to make it more inclusive and equal.
