President Joko Widodo made infrastructure a priority sector as an effort to encourage connectivity and reduce inequality. But in practice infrastructure development often caused various environmental, social, and human rights issues.
The G20 countries under Japan Presidency put Quality Infrastructure Investment as one of the priority issues. This means that infrastructure financing must not only comply with ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) standards, but also support development goals to improve quality of life, connectivity, and public services by using existing resources responsibly and sustainably.
ResponsiBank Indonesia as part of Fair Finance Asia had the opportunity to raise our concerns on Quality Infrastructure Investment in the “Responsible Investment for Quality Infrastructure” session at the C20 meeting on April 23, 2019 in Tokyo, Japan. The session conducted a fruitfull discussion between civil society and government official represented by Toshiyuki Miyoshi (Director of the Development Policy Division of the Japanese Ministry of Finance), Petter Matthews (Executive Director of CoST: The Infrastructure Transparency Initiative), Han Chen (Energy Policy Manager, International Natural Resources Defense Council / NRDC) and Dia Mawesti (Sustainable Development Officer Prakarsa) and moderated by Bernadette Victorio (Oxfam in Cambodia Program Coordinator)
