GOVERNMENT TARGET STUNTING PREVALENCE TO FALL BY 3,8% POINTS IN 2023

Jakarta, - The government is targeting a reduction in stunting of 3,8% points for 2023, so that by the end of this year the national prevalence of stunting will fall to 17,8%. To achieve this target, there needs to be more serious action to accelerate stunting reduction.

Deputy for Human Development Policy Support and Equal Development of the Vice President's Secretariat, Suprayoga Hadi, said that actions to accelerate stunting reduction must be further increased this year and next year. Therefore, his party invited 14 provinces and 288 districts/cities to Jakarta to synchronize actions and increase acceleration in reducing stunting.

These 288 districts/cities come from 12 provinces that have a high prevalence of stunting and have the highest number of stunted children, as well as 2 provinces where during the two years 2021 and 2022 the prevalence of stunting has increased.

Suprayoga Hadi expressed this during his opening remarks at the Technical Coordination Meeting (Rakortek) for the Acceleration of Stunting Reduction in 2023 on Thursday, 5 October 2023. This colossal activity took place on 4-7 October 2023 at the Grand Mercure Hotel Kemayoran, Jakarta, with 1079 people present. "We hope that these regions can multiply concrete actions so that stunting reduction acceleration is achieved within the remaining time," said Suprayoga Hadi.

Suprayoga Hadi reminded that the current national target is quite tough so it is impossible to do it using normal methods. In these two years, the prevalence of stunting must be reduced by 7,6% points or 3,8% points every year. "This requires more massive real action and stronger commitment from regional leaders at all levels of government," he said.

In fact, what all regions have done to accelerate stunting reduction is quite encouraging. This can be measured from the value of the Special Index for Handling Stunting (IKPS), where the performance of handling stunting continues to increase from 2018 to 2022. The IKPS index rose 2,4 points, from 70 in 2018 to 72,4 in 2022. This means commitment all levels of government are becoming more serious and national action is increasingly focused on targets.

The government has been intensifying the stunting reduction program as a national priority since 2018 and has succeeded in reducing the prevalence of stunting by 9,2% points, from 30,2% in 2018 to 21,6% in 2022. This performance is one and a half times faster than the rate of reduction in stunting in previous period, 2013–2018. The success of reducing the prevalence of stunting has resulted in 2,6 million children being saved in the last four years, from 7,3 million stunted children in 2018 to 4,7 million children in 2022.

Head of BKKBN Hasto Wardoyo said that by the end of 2023 the stunting rate must decrease by 3,8% points, so that the prevalence of stunting becomes 17,8%. The same target must also be achieved in the following year 2024, so that the 14% target will be achieved.

The reduction target of 3,8% points is a high figure, so it must be achieved with hard work, because over the last four years the reduction in stunting has averaged 2,3% points per year. “So all elements must increase commitment and strengthen real action. "This is where the Technical Coordination Meeting (Rakortek) is important to ask all regions that come to have the right breakthrough in reducing stunting," he said.

This coordination meeting was filled with panel discussions, talk shows, and parallel discussions on specific intervention classes, sensitive interventions, and governance. Apart from evaluating the implementation of the stunting reduction acceleration program, sharing experiences and knowledge, this discussion was also to formulate concrete action plans in 2023 and 2024 to achieve the target of reducing the prevalence of stunting to 14% in 2024.
