As a form of collective work, this book would not have been possible without the intervention and assistance of many parties. Representing the Association PraKarsa, the author would like to thank all parties who have played a role in bringing this book before the reader. The author thanks Hans Antlöv who supported the research topic we proposed from the start. We also thank Meuthia-Ganie-Rochman for her book An Uphill Struggle; The Advocacy NGO Under Soeharto's New Order was the blueprint for the initial design of our research. We convey the same thing to Ratih Setyorini, Purnama Adil Marata, Jalal, Nur-Iman Subono, Bagus Giripurwo, Edriana Nurdin, Lies Marcoes-Natsir, Patra M. Zen and Budiman Tanuredjo who have sharpened the writing of the presentations in this book. Likewise Sita Aripurnami, Ifdhal Kasim, Ani Widyani Soetjipto and Enceng Sobirin who were willing to guide the crucial process in the four roundtable discussions that we held to improve the overall presentation.

The author is also aware that the process of collecting data would not have been possible without the support from dozens of resource persons spread across thirteen cities in three countries. For this reason, the authors express high appreciation to Sarah Lerry Mboeik in Kupang, Muspani in Bengkulu and Imam Aziz in Yogyakarta who have allowed us to document their work. We convey the same appreciation to our fellow activists and alumni of YLBHI, LBH Lampung, LBH Jakarta, and LBH Surabaya, as well as WRI colleagues, Mitra Wanita, KPI, Women's Solidarity, Puan Amal Hayati, LBH APIK, YKP and Komnas Perempuan in Jakarta. Likewise for colleagues from LBH APIK Yogyakarta, Rumpun Tjut Nya' Dien, KPI Yogyakarta, Riefka Annisa and SBPY in Yogyakarta as well as colleagues from KPMM, LP2M, KPI Padang and PSW IAIN Imam Bonjol in Padang and Solok who have supported our data collection. . We also do not forget to express our deep gratitude to Roy Culpeper, Ann Weston and Bente Molenaar from the North South Institute, and Ivor Jenkins and Paul Graham at the Institute for Democracy in South Africa (Idasa) who have helped a lot for the smooth documentation of international case studies. we are in both Canada and South Africa.

In closing, we also thank the Indonesian LP3ES Library for agreeing to accept the offer of cooperation to publish this simple work. The presentation in this book is far from perfect, but we hope that it will still be of use to those who read and care about the future role of civil society activism in Indonesia. As with the forms of the Association's publications PraKarsa On the other hand, this book is a vessel for gathering a wealth of valuable knowledge from civil society experiences in order to convince us all that the sun is still shining and that brighter days are still possible to come.
