Training on Financing a Just Energy Transition

Jakarta, The PRAKARSA – Responsibank Indonesia, PRAKARSA and Profundo held training discussing Financing the Just Energy Transition (JET) in Indonesia. Juliette Laplane as a senior researcher at Profundo discussed the context of JET in Indonesia, the JET mechanism, government policies to encourage JET, and the responsibility of the financial sector in realizing JET.

This training was divided into two sessions, the first session had the theme "Just Energy Transition in the Indonesian Context". This session discusses a just energy transition in the Indonesian context. Training participants learned about the importance of JET in Indonesia and how it can be implemented.

In the material presented by Juliette, the Indonesian government needs at least $20 billion in funds over a period of 3-5 years to support JET. These funds will come from various sources such as grants, soft loans, loans at market interest rates, guarantees and private investment. Although this amount of funds is still far from enough to make major changes to the energy sector in Indonesia, this provides a positive signal to investors.

Then the second session continued with in-depth material discussing "The Role of the Financial Sector in a Just Energy Transition". This session discusses the role of the financial sector in a just energy transition. Training participants learn about the JET financing mechanism, the advantages and disadvantages of this mechanism, and how the financial sector can encourage JET through government policy.

This training was attended by more than 40 people from different backgrounds ranging from students, teachers, lecturers, NGOs, private sector, private companies and government.
